Why the page number is the hard part
Most citation generators format metadata you already have: you type the author, the year and the title, and they punctuate it. None of them can tell you which page your claim is on, because they never open the document. cytado starts from the other end — it reads the paginated text, finds the passage and reports the printed page number, the one that appears on the page itself and survives in print.

What it will not do
It will not invent a source for a claim nothing supports, and it will not attach a page number to a document that has no printed pagination — you get the citation without the page instead of a made-up one. Sources published behind a paywall are cited by metadata only; we never republish text we are not allowed to.

- Is this different from a normal citation generator?
- Yes. A normal generator formats data you supply. cytado finds the source and the page for you — you supply the claim, not the metadata.
- Where does the page number come from?
- From the printed page number inside the document, extracted page by page. That is the number a reader sees in the paper copy, so a supervisor checking the citation lands on the right page.
- What if my claim is wrong or too vague?
- Then nothing is returned. A generator that always finds something is a generator you cannot trust.
- Can I use it for a whole bibliography?
- Yes — that is what the bibliography generator does, on a full list of sources at once.
